How an Electric Furnace Works
An electric furnace is actually not a combustion based system, as most heating systems are. Rather than using a burner assembly to burn fuel, an electric furnace uses a large heating coil. The more resistance that an electrical current meets as it travels through metal, the more energy gets diverted into the surrounding area as heat. The heat that is thrown off of the heating coil is what ends up heating the air being circulated through the furnace, which in turn heats the home. When the furnace is turned off, the flow of electricity stops and the heating coil cools off again.
The Advantages of Using an Electric Furnace
Electric furnaces have a number of advantages over other systems, including gas furnaces. For one, an electric furnace can operate pretty much anywhere that there is an electrical current. As most homes in the country have an electrical grid, an electric furnace can operate in a great many places. By contrast, natural gas furnaces are limited to homes that have a natural gas line installed in them.
Electric furnaces are also much cleaner systems than gas furnaces (or other combustion systems). Any system that has to burn fuel is going to have a number of combustion byproducts left over. This includes carbon molecules, as well as toxic gases like carbon monoxide. These byproducts are typically disposed of by the system, but they still pose a threat if the system malfunctions. An electric furnace has no such byproducts, as it converts electricity directly into heat.
