Gas vs. Electric

Even if you are certain that you want to use a furnace in order to heat your home, you are going to have to narrow that choice down further. There are both gas and electric furnaces to consider, and each system has its own pros and cons. Consider the following information in determining which type of system best suits you.

First of all, the gas furnace may well be the most popular of all home heating systems available. Natural gas is quite clean-burning for a fossil fuel, and tends to be quite affordable. However, the use of a gas furnace does necessitate the proximity to a gas line. Some homes may not have access to natural gas, and some homeowners simply prefer not to pipe this gas to their homes.

Electric furnaces offer the benefit of using only electricity in their operation, which is available in just about any home. These systems are also incredibly efficient, as they don’t lose heat via the venting of flue gases. However, electricity is also generally much more expensive than natural gas, so an electric furnace may still prove more costly to run.
