How to Save Energy and Cut Costs in 2016

A new year is upon us, and chances are that you want this year to be better than last year. If you’re a homeowner, then you probably have a few ideas about how to spruce up things around the home: perhaps painting the bathroom, putting on a new roof this spring, or maybe even a home addition. But there are other priorities as well, such as cutting costs around the home however you can. In our day and age, it’s become more and more important for everyone to be aware of how much energy they are using, whether they want to keep bills low or they’re thinking about environmental impact. Here are some tips on how to save energy and cut costs this year.

  • Maintain what you’ve got already. New HVAC equipment and water heaters are expensive. They’re probably the most costly appliances in the home, and you don’t want to do so unnecessarily. But if you want them to be there for you when you need them most, then it’s imperative that you reach out to a professional maintenance. Your water heater will need to be routinely flushed, and your HVAC unit systematically cleaned and tuned-up.
  • Invest in a new heating or air conditioning system. If your AC or heating system is older than a decade and is no longer operating as it should, then it may be in your best interest to replace the unit entirely. Today’s systems offer incredible energy efficiency ratings (SEER, HSPF, AFUE) that you may want to take advantage of to ensure that you’re using the least amount of energy as possible.
  • Consider a ductless or tankless appliance. If you are considering a new HVAC system or a water heater, then you may want to think about an alternative to conventional systems. A ductless heat pump avoids the use of air ducts entirely so that there is no intermediary between you and your heating and cooling. This cuts down on a substantial amount of energy loss, especially with leaky ducts. A tankless water heater heats your water supply on-demand so that no energy goes to waste.
