Ventilator Installation

Mechanical Ventilation in Fairfield & Westchester Counties

While a well-insulated, air-tight home sounds ideal to keep conditioned air in, this can lead to other downsides like stagnating air that breeds germs and bacteria. So how do you keep conditioned air in while maintaining fresh and clean air?

The answer is mechanical ventilation. With the proper ventilation technology in place, your home will benefit from the appropriate amount of fresh air without wasting the air that has been conditioned by your AC or heater. There are two types of mechanical ventilation units: Heat recovery ventilators (HRVs) and energy recovery ventilators (ERVs). Though similar in nature, these units differ slightly. The professionals at T&H Mechanical Systems can help you determine whether an HRV or an ERV is right for your home.

What Is an ERV?

An energy recovery ventilator is essentially a pair of ducts with blowers attached. One blows fresh air from the outdoors into your home while the other blows stagnant air inside your home out. It’s an effective system for transferring air, though if you’re trying to keep your home warm in the middle of winter, you can see an issue.

That’s why a heat exchange sits at the apex between the ducts. It shifts the heat energy from the outgoing air to the incoming air, all without the ducts crossing streams. That ensures that your heater or air conditioner doesn’t lose any energy and the air is still swapped out effectively.

The Benefits of an Energy Recovery Ventilator

At T&H Mechanical Systems, our Stamford ventilator technicians have seen the benefits of energy recovery ventilators and can spell them out in detail.

When you install an ERV, you will enjoy benefits such as:

  • Less stress on your heater and air conditioner
  • Lower monthly energy bills
  • Lower risk of repairs to your heating and cooling systems
  • Reduced risk of illness and colds in your family
  • Fresher and more comfortable air

When we button up an energy efficient home, the stagnant air can create all kinds of health problems and encourage the growth of mold and bacteria. ERV eliminates all of that, making your home a happier and healthier place to be. T&H Mechanical Systems handles ERV installation, repair and maintenance services throughout the area and we’ll be with you every step of the way to ensure that our energy recovery ventilator works exactly the way it should. How Does an HRV Work?

The concepts behind a heat recovery ventilator are fairly simple and easy to grasp. The system is set up in your attic – hot air rises in your home, making the attic an ideal spot for the unit. An air duct with a fan attached blows air from outside the house in, while a second one blows indoor air out of your home. The ducts never touch and the air never crosses streams, but a heat exchanger affixed between them shifts the temperature from the outgoing air to the incoming air. As a result, the air is kept fresh and fails to stagnate without losing any of the warmth that your heater has worked so hard to generate.

Why Does That Benefit Me?

For starters, an HRV helps your home retain warm temperatures more effectively. Your heater won’t have to work as hard, lowering your monthly heating bills. The lowered stress on your heating system means it runs a reduced risk of a breakdown as well. In addition, by swapping out the stagnant air, the system helps reduce the risk of illness in your family and helps your home feel fresher and more inviting. As part of a larger strategy of household energy efficiency, it can be quite effective.
